John O’Mahony – Race Report

In News, Race Reports by Joe Johnson1 Comment

When I was originally asked to complete a race report  on my 1stOlympic Triathlon I said yes immediately. Upon giving it some further thought, I wondered who would want to read it. I’m not an experienced triathlete and a very weak swimmer, but determined and stubborn to boot and only took up the sport last year, having come from a running background (Ultra, Marathon running) but I’m hooked into the sport now and looking forward to my next experience in Wexford on the 24thof this month.

John O’Mahony – 1stOlympic Triathlon ( Athy)

Arrived in Athy early and went to registration to collect race number and timing chip. Now I was in race mood.  Collected my  gear and bike, and went to transition to get set up properly. Laid out all gear for the bike and run and got into wet suit. Now the nerves started to hit. Was last into the water and found up stream difficult but got into rhythm on the return leg.  Was 4thlast out of the water and straight to transition ( It was then I knew I was not gonna win !!!!!) and onto the bike.

Got into nice relaxed position on the bike, and started to pick off other athlete’s that would have passed me on the swim. Practised eating and drinking on the bike, as this was an area I needed to improve on. Lost my water bottle around mile 5 on the bike, so definitely more practised needed there.  Coming into T2 I loosed my cleats out of the peddles in anticipation of getting legs loosed for the run.

Dumped the bike in transition and runners on and started the run. Got into a pace on lap 1 and again overtook other runner’s. Running around the canal course was lovely and I started to enjoy myself and take in what I was about to achieve. Coming around the turn into the finish line was a moment Ill savour. I have started and finished my first Olympic Triathlon. Seeing other Belpark members at the finish was a welcome sight also and nice to share the moment with.

My time was under sub 3 but not confirmed as I lost my timing chip in the swim, bit to me time was not important as I just wanted to finish.

Really enjoyed the day and can’t wait for my next event later this month.
